The Real-Time Marketing Drumbeat Gets Louder, as Agencies, Brands Sign On | from eMarketer

In a February 2012 survey by GolinHarris, consumers expressed more positive feelings about brands after they were exposed to real-time marketing than before the exposure. Nearly half said they would feel more positive, while 46% would be more interested in the brand. Likelihood to recommend, to consider making a purchase, and to try or buy all were also significantly higher after exposure to real-time marketing.

As Guy Slattery, executive vice president of marketing at A&E Network, said: “Marketers are realizing that the big moments that happen on social are very fleeting and quick. If you can capitalize on those and be a part of them, that’s really the next level.”

When the Government Comes Knocking, Who Has Your Back?

Hat tip to Josh Stearns for making us aware of this 2012 report.

Via the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

When you use the Internet, you entrust your online conversations, thoughts, experiences, locations, photos, and more to companies like Google, AT&T and Facebook. But what happens when the government demands that these companies to hand over your private information? Will the company stand with you? Will it tell you that the government is looking for your data so that you can take steps to protect yourself?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation examined the policies of 18 major Internet companies — including email providers, ISPs, cloud storage providers, and social networking sites — to assess whether they publicly commit to standing with users when the government seeks access to user data. We looked at their terms of service, privacy policies, and published law enforcement guides, if any. We also examined their track record of fighting for user privacy in the courts and whether they’re members of the Digital Due Process coalition, which works to improve outdated communications law. Finally, we contacted each of the companies with our conclusions and gave them an opportunity to respond and provide us evidence of improved policies and practices. These categories are not the only ways that a company can stand up for users, of course, but they are important and publicly verifiable.

While some Internet companies have stepped up for users in particular situations, it’s time for all companies that hold private user data to make public commitments to defend their users against government overreach. The purpose of this report is to incentivize companies to be transparent about what data flows to the government and encourage them to take a stand for user privacy when it is possible to do so.

Read through for the report’s findings.

analyticisms:

Women Overtake Men in Smartphone Ownership in the UK

A new Infographic from IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group) out of the UK aims to show the “Explosion of Mobile”. IMRG worked with eDigitalResearch to track the growth in the mobile channel in the UK market over the past three years.

This snapshot illustrates the shift from smartphone business use to the hands of the consumer. In 2010 we saw Men dominate smartphone ownership with 63% of the gender pie. Today we see more of a a Female skew with 58% woman owning this device.

Changes in age are also illustrated here with the most change from 2010 to 2013 in the senior category 55+.

According to IMRG, UK has a 60% smartphone penetration which is much higher than in my home country of Canada where it is expected that only 47% of Canucks have this device.

You can check out the full infographic on the IMRG website.

Analyzing share of time spent on social networking sites in December 2012, comScore reveals that while Facebook dominated at 83% share, Tumblr occupied the second spot (5.7%), more than Pinterest (1.9%), Twitter (1.7%), and LinkedIn (1.4%) combined, and almost as much as the aggregate of all other social networks (6.1%).

18-29-year-olds more than twice as likely as the average internet user to use Tumblr (13% vs. 6%).

(via Chart/table from: Tumblr Beat Pinterest, Twitter, and LinkedIn for SocNet Time Spent in December)

facebook still has the lead… All though it’s going down.
The fact that the younger generation are more mobile savvy is no surprise, but the latest USA Touchpoints analysis dives a bit deeper by looking at average weekly reach across mobile (cell phone, tablet, and eBook reader) by app category. Data reveals that the 25-34 age group edges out the 18-24 age group in most categories other than gaming, music and video apps.

localsocial:

One point also worth highlighting is that it appears researchers are forecasting mobile data traffic to increase sharply because of more devices online — not users.

By 2017, Cisco is predicting there will be 5.2 billion mobile users — up from 4.3 billion in 2012. But they also predicted that there will be more than 10 billion connected devices (including more than 1.7 billion M2M connections) within four years — up from 7 billion total in 2012.

We are going to need a bigger box for this jump.

searchengineland:
